Why this place exists

I've been coming to Levi for years, long before I owned anything here.

It's fifteen minutes from the airport to the slopes. The resort is properly developed — there are shops, restaurants and bars that stay open — and the cross-country tracks are among the best in Finland. Step a little away from the centre and real Lapland starts almost immediately.

So I kept going back, and I kept staying in other people's places.

Hotels, and the lottery of rentals

Hotels are fine for a night or two. For a week they wear thin: you can't cook, the room is small, and the whole thing starts to feel like an airport.

Rentals were a lottery. Plenty of good-looking ones turned out to be a long way from the slopes — "ski-in/ski-out" that meant eight hundred metres in ski boots, carrying skis. And many had saved money on exactly the things you notice at the end of a long day: four mismatched plates, one blunt knife, pillows that gave up years ago. A few had somehow achieved an institutional feeling — tired furniture and bare walls.

None of that is expensive to fix. It just has to matter to someone.

Cranberry

A few years ago I decided to buy a place and get it right — first for my own family, then for other people. I looked at a lot of apartments and none of them quite worked, until the Cranberry building came onto the market in Levi.

It had everything that had been on my list:

• Genuine ski-in/ski-out — ten to twenty metres from the ski storage to the Glacier Express lift, and you can ski even that
• Ground-floor apartments could have their own hot tub on the terrace
• A heated garage where an EV charger could be installed
• The centre, with its shops and restaurants, about a hundred metres away

That is, more or less, a perfect location.

The rest was detail

The kitchen is equipped the way I'd want it myself, not the way a rental usually is. The beds have real duvets, and spare pillows in different weights because people are particular. The drying cabinet exists because wet gloves in the morning ruin a day.

None of it is a stage set. It's the apartment I spent years looking for and couldn't find.
